Getting Up & Running
The information below will help prepare you to begin contributing to the University of Washington’s teaching and research mission. Click on all the tabs that apply to your role at UW.
All new faculty should:
Send official transcripts – Arrange to have official transcripts sent directly from the educational institution where you earned your terminal/highest to the School of Nursing. Please note that a delay in transcripts could delay your first paycheck. Your degree-granting institution should send your transcripts to sontranscripts@uw.edu or through the US Postal Service to:
UW School of Nursing Human Resources
Box 357260, University of Washington
Seattle, WA 98195
Provide license and certification – Meet with the assistant to your department chair or your department’s Vice Chair for Education to share your license and board certification information; keep credentials up to date throughout employment
Visit the UW Office of Academic Personnel & Faculty website, which includes a specially-curated section for new faculty that covers everything from registering for Faculty Welcome Week to promotion and tenure.
If you will be teaching, you should:
Explore Teaching@UW – UW’s hub for learner-centered and reflective teaching practices and quality, evidence-based programs and resources. Consider registering for the Teaching@UW New Faculty Program, which is held annually.
Reach out to SoN Learning Technologies – The Learning Technology team within the School of Nursing’s Office of Student and Academic Affairs supports instructional faculty by providing learning-centered services like instructional design, education technology, and media support (UW netID required).
Attend a teaching orientation – Each quarter, SoN academic units host a teaching orientation led by the Vice Chair for Education. Keep an eye out for an invitation from your unit.
For questions about the orientation, feel free to reach out to:
Brenda Zierler, Vice Chair for Education
Department of Biobehavioral Nursing & Health Informatics
Elaine Walsh, Vice Chair for Education
Department of Child, Family, & Population Health Nursing
If your role includes research activities, you should:
Complete required training – All UW employees engaged in research activities must complete required training before research begins. Depending on the nature of your research and role, additional training may be required or recommended. Visit https://www.washington.edu/research/required-training/ to identify and complete all required training.
Explore research tools and systems – UW offers a variety of applications and systems that you may use as part of your research activities, either independently or in collaboration with other researchers. To learn about and access research-related tools and systems, visit UW’s Research Administration Tools webpage.
Leverage the Office of Research – The Office of Research resources webpage is a terrific jumping off point for information related to research policy, processes, training, funding opportunities, and forms/templates. They also have a great onboarding page geared toward new UW faculty.
Connect with ONRI – The School of Nursing’s Office for Nursing Research & Innovation (ONRI) is here to support you in establishing and growing a successful research program at UW.
If you will be working in a clinical setting, you should:
Understand your clinical assignment – Connect with your chair to get the full picture on your clinical assignment including who will be your specialty track lead/coordinator
Provide required documentation – Before you can begin work at a clinical site, you must provide information about your clinical license to your department (typically the Vice Chair of your department or their designee). If you are unsure of the specific clinical license requirement, please contact your supervisor.
Clinical compliance Once you are set up in Workday, you will need to email the SoN Clinical Placement team and provide the following information:
- Employee ID #
- UW email address
- UW NetID
- Cell phone number
- Date of birth
- Course number and clinical site you will be associated with (ex: NCLIN 416, UWMC-Montlake)

The SoN Clinical Placement team will circle back to you with information about clinical compliance, immunization requirements, and reporting responsibilities.
