Getting Up & Running
The information below will help prepare you to begin contributing to the University of Washington mission. Click on all the tabs that apply to your role at UW.
All new staff should:
Attend Welcome Day – Welcome Day explores the UW Employee Benefits package and the importance of creating and maintaining an inclusive and safe learning and work environment. This informative orientation is required for most staff positions.
Understand your employment program – Benefits, compensation, time off, time reporting obligations, and other employment provisions are defined by the employment program (e.g., civil service non-exempt vs. exempt; non-union vs. covered under a collective bargaining agreement). If you are unclear, check with your supervisor or the Human Resources & Payroll Services team.
Familiarize yourself with time reporting – If you are civil service non-exempt, it is important that you know how and when to enter your hours worked so you are paid accurately and on time. Consider bookmarking UW’s Time Entry webpage which takes you through the timeline and steps for entering your time.
Check out the School of Nursing Staff Council – The SoN Staff Council facilitates consideration of staff perspective on School of Nursing governance and leadership activities and provides resources, information, and community-building opportunities to support staff growth and belonging. NOTE: NetID required
Check out UW’s Professional Staff Organization – The Professional Staff Organization (PSO)the professional staff at all University locations by advocating and providing educational resources to their work and effective representation of their general interests.
If your position is part of a union, you should:
Review the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) on the UW Labor Relations website. Your offer letter should specify which union contract covers your position. Feel free to reach out to your supervisor or SoN HR if you aren’t sure.
Employees with questions or concerns about their dues deductions should contact their union representative. Preliminary contact information can be found on each contract’s dedicated page. Please take a moment to read the article that applies to dues deduction; you may also want to review your membership agreement.
If you will help conduct research, you should:
Complete required training – All UW researchers must complete certain training before research begins. Depending on the focus and type of your research, you may have additional requirements. Identify and complete all required training by visiting https://www.washington.edu/research/required-training/.
Explore research tools and systems – UW has a number of applications and systems you may need to use as part of a research group. To learn about and access research-related tools and systems, visit UW’s Research Administration Tools webpage.
Leverage the Office of Research – The Office of Research resources webpage is a terrific jumping off point for information related to research policy, processes, training, funding opportunities, and forms/templates.
Connect with ONRI – The School of Nursing’s Office for Nursing Research & Innovation (ONRI) is here to support you in establishing and growing a successful research program at UW.
One more thing!…
Be sure to connect with your supervisor as there may be additional onboarding information and activities that are specific to your team or role.
Thank you for joining the team!
We look forward to all the great things you will do!
